Chapter 23: If I Could Change the Schools
1. Learning
to learn is the key. And if your kids have forgotten how, it’s only because
their knowledge of these primal processes has been chased into hiding by you or
too much public schooling.
2. Eleven
points of change for education:
a. Take
your signal from the child, not the book. To help young people develop their
own gifts, we need to learn how to recognize their differences (such as left or
right brand, readiness to learn, how they take in information) and seek ways to
provide each individual with the greatest opportunities for success.
b. Stop
setting the teachers up as both educators and executioners. Involve the
individual student, parents, teachers and the entire class in the learning
process.
c. Teach
generalized principles.
d. Teach
the principles of money, business and finance.
e. Use
music in teaching.
f. Allow
the students to leave the school at the age of 15 if they so desire, so they
would free to explore the world with the understanding that they could come
back when they were ready and willing.
g. Teach
more in less time.
h. Use
games to teach.
i.
Allow the students to choose the subjects that
interested them – so they will realize that learning could actually be fun.
j.
Encourage lifelong learning through employment.
k. Never
force the kids to go to school.
